What jeans are best for pregnancy?
You may be wondering if you can continue wearing your regular jeans for your pregnancy. It’s probably unlikely, sorry gals. In our opinion, the three trimesters all have very different needs when it comes to jeans. Personally, I found high-waist jeans absolutely uncomfortable in the first trimester. This was due to the fact I preferred rigid jeans, so the button really dug into my bloated belly. Also, I was pretty sick, so I was living on white salty carbs (let’s not go there today, I still have flashbacks). Back to comfortable stylish clothing! The best way to get through the first trimester when it comes to maternity jeans is to choose regular stretchy pants, swap to skirts or embrace elastic waisted pants.
Your second trimester is usually but not always the best time to wear maternity-specific clothing, including jeans. Third trimester is when you’ll wish you had a pair of maternity jeans or three to bring your bump to life and feel like you’re able to balance style and comfort.
Don’t stress about getting back into your pre-preggo pants straight away. There are postpartum jeans – we’ve shown one below – and to be honest, you might just want to lock in leggings for a while as you and bub get to know each other.

FAQs
What week do you start wearing maternity jeans?
It’s different for every woman and depends on the size and growth of your bump. Typically, most women start wearing maternity jeans in the second trimester.
How tight should maternity jeans be?
Maternity jeans should be snug, but not too tight. They should fit comfortably around your hips, thighs, and legs. A good rule of thumb is to choose a size that fits your current shape, but also provides some room for growth as your pregnancy progresses.
How many jean sizes do you go up when pregnant?
It varies from woman to woman. Some women need to go up one or two sizes, while others may need to go up several sizes.
Can I wear my regular jeans while pregnant?
Wearing regular jeans during the early stages of pregnancy may be possible but probably not if they are high waisted. You can use a belly band and keep them unbuttoned for a while. But as your bump grows, regular jeans may become too tight or uncomfortable. Maternity jeans are made to fit your growing baby and provide extra comfort when your bump becomes more pronounced. And that will happen!
How do you wear regular jeans as maternity jeans?
There are a few do-it-yourself methods for converting regular jeans into maternity jeans, such as extending the waistband with a hair tie or belly band that covers the open button. However, as your pregnancy progresses, these might not be super comfortable for you or practical. By the third trimester you’ll benefit from comfortable maternity jeans you can rely on.
Are maternity jeans stretchy?
Most maternity jeans are made of stretchy materials to accommodate your growing belly and provide additional comfort. The stretchiness of jeans varies depending on the brand and style.
