The Essentials – Bamboo Edit

There’s no doubt about it, there’s a lot on your plate when you start your pregnancy journey. The trick to staying in control is to simplify as much as you can. One easy way to take the pressure off is by investing in comfortable, stylish staples that you can wear knowing they feel great and you do too. In this Essentials edit, we’ll cover Bamboo and why it’s the perfect material for pregnancy and postpartum.

Why focusing on your physical comfort is so important

One way you can look after your mental load as well as your body and confidence is by choosing clothing that makes you physically feel looked after. Bamboo fabric is quickly gaining popularity among pregnant and postpartum women, and for good reason. Not only is bamboo fabric sustainable and environmentally friendly, but it also boasts a host of comfort benefits for mamas-to-be.

Diana is the founder and CEO of Yummy Maternity, an Australian based store producing bamboo bodywear for pregnant and nursing mothers. Diana says, “During pregnancy, our bodies crave fabrics that are soft and gentle. Feeling comfortable becomes all-important as every part of us is changing right before our eyes. Bamboo answers so many needs during this incredibly special, but also physically challenging time, that make it the perfect match for pregnancy.”

Why bamboo is so good for pregnancy

Bamboo is unique in that it’s one of the few natural fibers that grows with your body. “We all know that bamboo is silky soft to touch but it is also has the added benefits of stretching with you as your bump grows, being naturally breathable and antibacterial, thermoregulating and moisture-wicking. The buttery soft comfort of bamboo against the skin for your tops and underwear will serve both mama and bump well for the entire pregnancy,”  says Diana.

1. Sustainability

For the eco-conscious mama, it’s good to know that Bamboo is one of the most sustainable plants on the planet. It’s fast-growing, requires very little water, pesticides, and little to no fertilizers. Unlike other crops, bamboo doesn’t need to be replanted after it’s harvested, making it an excellent choice for sustainable farming. Companies like Boody and Yummy Maternity take great pride in transparency when it comes to the sourcing of their bamboo products.

2. Softness

Bamboo fabric is incredibly soft and gentle on the skin, which is perfect for a growing belly. If you’re someone who suffers itchiness, psoriasis or eczema, you’ll be pleased to know that as your body changes and your skin becomes more sensitive, bamboo fabric won’t irritate or scratch you.  The softness of bamboo fabric is due to the round and smooth fibers that make up the plant. This is also what gives it a bit of stretch, especially when blended with something like spandex or Modal.

3. Breathability

Staying comfortable and cool is one of the biggest challenges for us mamas, especially during the summer months or if you’re running around other kids. Bamboo fabric is naturally breathable, which means it allows air to circulate around the body. The breathability of bamboo fabric is due to the porous nature of the fibers.

4. Moisture-wicking

You may find you’re running a little hotter and sweating more in pregnancy, especially if you’re pregnant over summer. Bamboo fabric is naturally moisture-wicking, which means it pulls moisture away from the skin and allows it to evaporate quickly, helping you stay dry and comfortable, even on the hottest days or longest preggo walks!

5. Anti-bacterial

Bamboo fabric has natural antibacterial properties, which means it doesn’t harbor bacteria and other germs that can cause infections or skin irritations. This feature is particularly beneficial for pregnant mamas who are more susceptible to infections, or who find they’re sweating a bit more than usual.

6. Hypoallergenic

Many pregnant women experience allergies or sensitivities to certain fabrics. Bamboo fabric is hypoallergenic, which means it’s less likely to cause allergic reactions or skin irritations. 5.
